SM Krishna, a respected leader and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away on Tuesday at 2:45 am at his home in Bengaluru. He was 92 years old.
Krishna led Karnataka as Chief Minister from October 11, 1999, to May 20, 2004. His tenure is remembered for driving progress and modernization in the state. After serving as CM, he became the Governor of Maharashtra, holding the position from December 6, 2004, to March 8, 2008.
He also played an important role in national politics, serving in key positions in the Union Cabinet, including as India’s External Affairs Minister. Krishna’s contributions to both Karnataka and the country have left a lasting legacy.
SM Krishna, born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli village, Maddur taluk, Karnataka, had an inspiring journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s most respected leaders. He pursued his early education in Mysuru before graduating from Government Law College in Bengaluru. As a Fulbright scholar, Krishna furthered his studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Beginning a Remarkable Political Career
His political journey began in 1962 when he was elected as an independent MLA from Maddur. Over the decades, Krishna held various significant roles, including Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of Parliament (MP) in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, deputy chief minister of Karnataka, and Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council.
From 1972 to 1977, he served as Karnataka’s Minister for Commerce, Industries, and Parliamentary Affairs. Later, he worked at the national level as Union Minister of State for Industry (1983-84) and Finance (1984-85). Krishna represented India on global platforms, participating in the United Nations in 1982, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in New Zealand in 1965, and a seminar at Westminster in 1990.
Krishna’s legacy shines brightest during his tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister and as India’s External Affairs Minister. In these roles, he spearheaded policies that advanced both Karnataka’s development and India’s foreign relations.
Beyond politics, Krishna was deeply passionate about education, law, and international affairs. Before committing to public service full-time, he taught International Law at Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya Law College in Bengaluru and actively engaged with the World University Service.
Outside his professional life, Krishna enjoyed tennis, designing men’s clothing, and reading. He married Prema in 1964, and together they built a life filled with shared love and accomplishments. Krishna’s journey remains a testament to his dedication, intellect, and passion for serving others.
