Sydney Sweeney is super popular but like many famous people she has to put up with online rudeness. This got worse recently when photos of her in a bikini went viral and she got many hate comments.

Sydney Sweeney is not the only one who gets body shamed online. Many celebrities do and it’s a big problem in the digital age.
A study called “The portrayal of online shaming in contemporary online news media” explains why public shaming happens. It calls it a growing global problem often driven by online opinions about “wrongdoing.”
In Sydney Sweeney’s case people hated her for being unedited, in a casual setting, in a bikini. Research shows American women spend 45 minutes a day grooming to meet beauty standards. When those standards aren’t met they get hit with a “beauty tax.”
The study shows beauty is linked to moral worth so when someone like Sydney Sweeney doesn’t meet those standards people see it as a moral failure. The internet makes this worse because it’s easy to shame online and it can go global in seconds.
The difference with the internet is the person being shamed doesn’t have to commit a “real crime.” They just have to be perceived as morally wrong. When someone feels someone is “wrong” they feel it’s okay to attack and shame them.
In Sydney Sweeney’s case people judged her unposed, unedited photos and tried to shame her.

Why All the Hate?
Why? Many of the hate comments were from men. A big reason could be the rise of online groups of lonely men, often called “incels” (involuntary celibates). These groups instead of making members feel better make them feel worse. The group’s frustration turns into hostility and they blame women for their problems which leads to misogyny.
This could be why some men felt the need to attack Sydney Sweeney. But blaming only these groups isn’t enough. Others who saw this shaming could feel inspired to join in.
But many did defend Sydney Sweeney so not everyone links beauty to moral worth.
Unfortunately there’s no easy fix to online shaming and misogyny. But it can change. It will take people to think about beauty standards and public shaming. But it can.
